Living as True Disciples

Living as True Disciples: Denying Self and Following Jesus
The path to true discipleship requires more than just Sunday worship - it demands daily surrender and sacrifice. Understanding what it means to be a disciple of Jesus is crucial for both individual growth and the health of the church body.

What Does Jesus Say About Being His Disciple?
In Matthew 16:24, Jesus lays out three key requirements for discipleship:
  • Deny yourself
  • Take up your cross
  • Follow Jesus

This calling is uncomfortable because it requires sacrificing selfishness. It's inconvenient because we must adapt to the cross, not vice versa. And it's noticeable because the cross should be visible in every aspect of our lives.

How Does the Body of Christ Work Together?
Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 12 that while the church has many members, it functions as one body. Each member plays a vital role, but all must work together under Christ's headship. This unity can only happen when members:
  • Put Jesus at the center, not themselves
  • Understand the gospel is for them but not about them
  • Serve others rather than expecting to be served

What Happens When We Don't Follow Jesus' Model?
When we fail to deny ourselves and follow Jesus, several problems arise:
  • We elevate ourselves instead of Jesus
  • We pick up offenses rather than our cross
  • We follow personalities and movements rather than Christ
  • The church loses its direction and unity

How Can We Live as True Disciples?
True discipleship requires:
  • Daily surrender and sacrifice
  • Serving others without seeking recognition
  • Following Jesus rather than human personalities
  • Contributing to the body as God has gifted us

Life Application
Consider these three challenging questions:
  • Are you denying yourself or elevating yourself?
  • Are you picking up the cross or picking up offenses?
  • Are you following Jesus or following personalities?

This week, focus on drawing a circle around yourself and letting transformation begin there. Look for opportunities to serve others sacrificially, even when it goes unnoticed. Remember that true kingdom impact happens when every member of the body works together in sacrifice and service.

Ask yourself: In what specific ways can I deny myself this week to better serve others and follow Jesus? Where have I been elevating myself instead of Christ? What changes do I need to make to ensure I'm following Jesus rather than human personalities?
