Letting Go & Finding Freedom

Letting Go & Finding Freedom
Are you holding onto something destructive in your life? Whether it's pain, rejection, anger, unforgiveness, or even good things that have become idols, anything we place above God can trap us and prevent us from experiencing true freedom in Christ.

The Rich Young Man's Encounter with Jesus
In Matthew 19:16-22, we meet a wealthy young man who approaches Jesus asking what good deed he must do to receive eternal life. This interaction reveals several important truths:
  • The man's question reflects a works-based mindset common then and now
  • The man claims to have kept all the commandments but still feels something lacking
  • Jesus identifies the man's true obstacle: his attachment to wealth

Why We Struggle to Let Go
Like the rich young man, we often:
  • Make things more complex than necessary
  • Expect God to answer in ways that match our preferences
  • Follow religious rules while missing heart transformation
  • Allow things to become idols that compete with God
  • Struggle to give up false identities we've built

What True Discipleship Requires
Jesus calls us to:
  • Radical, costly discipleship that requires sacrifice
  • Undivided loyalty and wholehearted obedience
  • Letting go of whatever competes with God in our hearts
  • Trusting God with the impossible things we can't change ourselves

Life Application
Take time this week to:
  • Identify what you might be clinging to that's destructive or competing with God
  • Ask yourself:
    • What has become so much a part of my identity that I struggle to let it go?
    • Am I willing to make the sacrifices required to follow Jesus fully?
    • Where do I need God's power to do what feels impossible?
  • Surrender those things to God, trusting His power to bring freedom

Remember: While it may be impossible for us to break free on our own, with God all things are possible. He can deliver us from whatever holds us back and empower us to walk in victory.
